A lot has changed over the last 12 months, throughout 2020 more people than ever turned to games during these unprecedented times, with many people playing games on mobile devices.
Mobile devices make a new genre of game possible, augmented reality games. Augmented reality means locations & objects in the real world are featured and even used by the game, when the player is physically at or near these real world locations.
This new genre of game has become increasingly popular with some augmented reality games regularly featured as the most downloaded games on mobile app stores. Currently the most popular augmented reality game on Android & iOS is Pokemon Go, with the game growing 45% during 2020, now having over 100,000,000 installs world wide on Android alone.
With that in mind members of our team who are fans of the game made a good case that Gardinia should become a sponsored location, this means anyone playing in the Huddersfield town centre will see Gardinia as a featured landmark on the game.
For example below you will see the game word accurately represents the real world, looking down Leeds Road when compared to Google Maps:
You will also see Gardinia along side other points of interest in Huddersfield when in-game events take place, for example at the time I was writing this blog players in Huddersfield could undertake raids (in game battles) at Gardinia, the Old Post Office and The Gas Works:
The location sponsorship works for both players of the game and Gardinia, players get a new location in the game, which can be interacted with remotely during COVID times. Gardinia can showcase our brand & product offerings.
When interacting with our in game location players can see the current advert we are running. At the moment this is for our Upvc Spares 4 Repairs trade counter, with the learn more link taking players to our Spares4Repairs website:
Players can also send Gardinia gifts (which are like virtual post cards) to their friends:
So there we have it, something a bit different for our blog post this week. Gardinia are the first company in Huddersfield to be featured as a location in a game!
